The Art of Opal Cutting and Shape

Unlike diamonds, opals are extremely technical to cut. Cutting and shaping an opal is a delicate dance between geometry, geology, and cutter's technique .

Every opal has a "face"—the direction from which the play-of-color looks the brightest and most vibrant. Our goal isn't just to make a pretty shape; it is to maximize the color yield while preserving as much weight as possible. Cut too deep, it will slice right through the thin "color bar," destroying the gem's value. Cut too shallow, and the stone remains cloudy or uneven. It requires a steady hand and a massive amount of patience.

When you receive our LamsOpal Jewellery, please appreciate our cutter's effort!
